Listening Skills

In an effective communication, there should be a free flow of ideas among the participants. Obviously, there will be a clash of ideas among different personalities. So, in order to arrive at a common conclusion which satisfies the views/opinions of all the parties involved, one and the most important skill that has to be practiced is active listening.

Active listening becomes upmost important because it may help us to get some valuable insights about the topic from other's perspective. In an organization, decision making is not the responsibility of a single person. It's a team- work. For example, if a manager of a supply chain enterprise wants to segment their customers according to their life style, he cannot take decisions of his own. He needs to carefully analyze the concerns of his distribution heads and different vendors. Because, from them he can derive at an efficient formula about segment the customers in a feasible and cost-effective manner.

Some times, when participants are more reluctant to listen to each others opinions , disputes happen. As a result, both the parties may not succeed in deriving at a solution. It may happen during interviews also, where active listening is an important grading element. If the candidate is not paying enough attention to the questions from the panel members, he/she may end up giving absolutely wrong answers. So, a person should have a high degree of concentration and ability to maintain his calmness. At the same time, he shouldn't exhibit any degree of nervousness.

So, in order to develop active listening, following methods can be used.
1. Practicing Yoga in order to have a high level of concentration.
2. Giving respect to each and every individual with whom we interact.
3. To make the discussion topics more interesting.
4. Maintain healthy relationships with the person we are interacting and so on.
